MONDAY 21ST DECEMBER Bad Manners/Max Splodge/The Rude Girls/Pedigree Scum Poole Lighthouse 21th December 2009 Due to the bad weather, on the night and following morning refunds were given to persons that had to leave before the band arrived. Unfortunately this was completely out of our hands and the worst road conditions in 10 years were a 'pretty' good excuse for the band. As I enter the Poole Lighthouse formerly The “Poole Arts Centre” my thoughts are filled full of many great gigs in the past that I have attended here Madness, The Cult, Joe Strummer, Iron Maiden and many more great bands that have graced this stage, sadly there seems to be to few live bands playing here these days. Tonight sees the return of Ska legends Bad Manners, local promoter “Sounds of the Suburbs” have brought them to Poole, possibly to kick start more bands playing this once great live music venue. 1st band on were local covers band “Pedigree Scum” who performed a collection of punk rock numbers such as The Jam’s “In The City” and The Kink’s “All of the Day and All of The Night”, after doing their best to warm up the Poole audience on the cold December evening they ended their set with a rather off key punk version of the Christmas classic “White Christmas”. After this things got a little awkward for promoter Lewis Hawkins as news broke that the band and supports acts were stuck in traffic on the motorway due the bad weather and would not be at the venue for a while. With the talented Bad Manners guitarist Simon Cuell who had arrived early, Lewis did his best to entertain the crowd with his own Ska and punk karaoke show which went down really well, with much of the audience singing and dancing along to classics from the likes Madness, The Specials, and The Clash. After leaving the stage further announcements were made that the bands would not arrive until just before 11pm, this rather unsettled the now impatient crowd and Lewis and Simon returned to the stage for another set doing their best to keep the crowd entertained. At 11pm news came from backstage that Buster was in the building and a huge cheer went up from around the Wessex Hall, the roadies hurriedly set up the equipment for the 8 piece band and within minutes a rather apologetic Buster Bloodvessel stood in front of the Poole crowd much to everybody’s delight. As soon as the band launched into their 1st few numbers including hits “Just a Feeling” and “Lorraine”, the audience were up on their feet dancing and singing along, proving that the wait was well worthwhile. Half way through the set the announced support acts were invited on to the stage to perform with the band while Buster took a well earned rest. The Rude Girls a 3 piece girl band took a song each to take the lead vocals on accompanied by the rest of Bad Manners who took on the job really well, seemingly without any previous rehearsal. Max splodge from zany notorious punk band “Splodgenessabounds” arrived on stage and got the crowd singing once again to well known punk songs “Hurry Up Harry” and “4 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps please “. Buster returned and Bad Manners finished their set of in style with “Lip up Fatty” and the ever popular “Can Can” which saw all the supports acts return to the stage with a various attempts at kicking their legs high in the air with even a large part of the audience doing the same, the set ended with Buster shockingly pulling down his shorts and mooning at the crowd. Even after the disappointments of the supports acts and Bad Manners turning up over 3 hours late, the bands and the promoters did their best to pull out all the stops and provide a great entertaining show, lets hope for more like these shows make their way here in the future.
